Chapter 22 – Hanging by a Moment

After you leave Izaya in the park, you wander into the city. After a few minutes, you stop to assess yourself...only to break down in tears. Izaya was right. You are just being selfish. You can’t have everything.

Suddenly, you take off and race across the city; desperate to go home.

Meanwhile, Tom and Shizuo are in the middle of work because it is still early in the day. Shizuo is daydreaming as they walk, but for some reason he feels the need to turn his head to the right to glance down the adjacent street. Shortly after he does, you go racing down the parallel street and back out of sight. Confused by what he just saw, Shizuo pauses for a moment.

“Hn? (F/n)?”

“Hey. What’s wrong?” Tom inquires, noticing Shizuo had stopped.

“I just saw (F/n) racing down that street.” Shizuo replies pointing in your direction. “Maybe I should check on her.”

“Well, I’m sure she’s okay. She’s pretty good at handling herself. Maybe she just forgot something and has to hurry. People run through this city all the time.”

“Hmm. I guess you’re right...” Shizuo says with a sigh. “We do have a lot to do today anyway, right?”

“Yeah, we do unfortunately. But hey, like I said, I’m sure she’s fine.” Tom says, trying to comfort Shizuo.

Even though Shizuo wants to go after you, he has to work; therefore he sends you a text message.

About two hours after seeing you run down the street, Shizuo begins to worry. In the past couple months since the two of you have been dating, you’ve kept your phone on you. Whenever Shizuo would call or text, you would reply within thirty minutes. So not hearing from you starts to get Shizuo on edge. He decides to give you a quick call but simply receives your voicemail.

Seven hours have passed since Shizuo saw you. He wants nothing more than to go find you, but he’s in the middle of a job with one more after this. As Tom talks to a man in a second-level apartment, Shizuo stands outside the door on the balcony walkway. Bored and uneasy, he looks down to a street below hoping to find something to distract his thoughts. Unfortunately, he finds Izaya.

Izaya himself happens to look up and spot Shizuo. The instant Izaya sees him, Izaya sprints off, terrified. Shizuo was about ready to go after Izaya until he realized something. Izaya usually doesn’t run away at the sight of him, he hangs around to do some teasing first. There could only be one reason for Izaya to take off like that: He was the reason you were running through the street. Izaya must have done something to you and now you won’t even talk.

Shizuo growls at himself for not realizing this sooner and leaps over the balcony.

Tom hears an odd noise and turns around to find that Shizuo is not behind him. Confused, Tom looks over and sees Shizuo running off. “Huh? HEY! Shizuo, where are you going!?”

Shizuo stops briefly and looks back. “Sorry, Tom! I have to go! We’ll talk later!”

Shizuo knew with the direction you were running earlier, you were heading to your apartment. So he sprints to your home in desperation. It doesn’t take him long to arrive and immediately starts banging on your door.

*Bang, bang, bang!*

“(F/n)? Are you in there? Hey!”

Silence.

Shizuo keeps banging on your door but receives no signs of life.

He steps back slightly and exhales. Sorry, (f/n)… Shizuo kicks your door open. He only breaks the lock, so he attempts to shut the door behind himself (it’s never wise to leave an open door in the city).

“(F/n)?” He calls rather worried. “(F/n)! Hey, you here?”

Shizuo keeps searching for you. As he approaches your bedroom door, he can hear a noise coming from the other side and leans in.

He can hear you crying.

Shizuo gently knocks. “(F/n)... Are you okay?”

Not once have you heard Shizuo, even when he kicked the door in. You are so upset you can’t hear anything except your own sobbing.

Shizuo tries again, but when you still don’t answer he carefully opens your door. In the darkness he discovers you in the corner, clinging to the Toothless he gave you with all your might and weeping uncontrollably.

Never has Shizuo’s heart ever felt so broken. He’s not entirely sure what to do because he’s never seen anyone cry like this. However, Shizuo’s heart allows him to move and he gradually makes his way into your room. When he gets to you, he can’t help but gaze in sorrow for a moment.

Shizuo crouches down in front of you. “(F/n). Hey...”

You finally hear him, and you cringe. Your crying pauses before you hug Toothless even tighter.

Shizuo carefully reaches out his hand and begins to stroke your head. You mumble something.

“Hmm? What did you say?” Shizuo asks.

You mumble louder into the plush dragon, “I’m sorry.”

Puzzled, Shizuo pulls back his hand and asks, “Sorry? What could you be sorry for?”

You squeeze Toothless once again.

Shizuo moves beside you. “Come here.” He brings you into a hug as you both lie against the wall. You finally open up and hug Shizuo while you still hold on to your plush. He rests his head on yours and rubs his thumb along your arm to comfort you.

After a few minutes, you begin to speak. “Shizuo... I’m sorry. I didn’t realize how selfish and greedy I’ve been.”

Shizuo pulls away slightly to look at you. “What are you talking about? You’re not like that.”

Slowly, you begin to tell Shizuo about your conversation with Izaya. You tell him that you never realized that you were being so selfish asking him and Izaya to change themselves so they could stop fighting.

“I feel like the most horrible person in the world... I made a mess of me.”* you say in Shizuo’s arms; tears slowly falling down your cheeks.

Shizuo thinks for a moment to sort out his thoughts before replying. “What’s wrong with wanting the best?”

You look up at Shizuo intently. He continues, “Sometimes a selfish request can be a good thing. You’re looking out for everyone. You just want us to be happy, right?”

You look down, letting Shizuo’s words sink in. “Well, yes. I guess you’re right.”

“Of course I am.” He chuckles lightly. “Listen, you’re not a horrible person. If nothing else, I admire you for being brave enough to try and come between us. If anyone could...it’s you...”

Shizuo trails off as he drifts into his thoughts, while you blush softly in his embrace.

“Thank you Shizuo. You are the best. Thank you for rescuing me.” You say as you snuggle into him.
