Chapter 15 – Rising Twin Dragons

“Hello?”

“Hey there, Shizuo!” you reply. You just started your lunch break so you decided to give Shizuo a call.

“Oh. Hey, (f/n). What’s going on?”

“Not much. I just wanted to call because I talked to Celty yesterday and she told me your birthday is next week! How come you didn’t tell me? Hahaha.” you ask, chuckling lightly.

“Sorry. I didn’t really think about it. I never bothered with it too much...”

“Well, I was wondering if you wanted to go do something! We could go out of town for the day, maybe grab some dinner, ummm....” You trail off in thought.

“Hey... If it’s alright with you, I’d like to not make a big deal of it.”

“O-Oh...” you sigh, feeling defeated.

Realizing that had sounded a little harsh, Shizuo tries to correct himself. “But, I mean... It’s not like I don’t want to be with you. I just don’t want to do a lot. Dinner sounds good actually.”

“Ah, ok. I understand what you mean. And dinner would be great. I’ll treat you! I’m also going to ask Mr. Matsuoka if I can leave early that day.”

“Heh. Thanks. I’ll meet you after work then?”

“You’re welcome! And yep, sounds good. See ya, Shizuo!”

“Later.” *beep*

Good! I made plans with Shizuo for his birthday! You think as you become excited, to say the least. But now I have to find something to get him…

It is two days later and you are strolling down the middle of Ikebukuro among the shops in hopes of finding Shizuo a present.

*sigh* This would have been easier if I had the chance to think of something first; but I really have no idea what to get him… You internally sob.

Just then, you notice a tiny store on the corner with beautiful polished stones in the window. You love rocks and gems, so you rush over to take a look hoping to take your mind off things for a minute. "Gen 3 Gemstones", huh? You think to yourself looking up at the sign before you enter.* You go in and begin looking at all the gemstones and rare rocks on display. They even have a small jewelry counter, which you begin to approach. On top, there is a stand with numerous necklaces of small polished stones; some of which are carved into animals. Instantly something seizes your attention. That’s it… Before you is a necklace with a small, carved black dragon on it.

“Excuse me, sir?” you ask the attendant behind the counter on the other side. “I can’t quite tell what kind of stone this is. Could you please tell me?”

The man turns around and walks over to you. “Oh, sure! That’s Black Jade! I think there’s one just like it in Green Jade too.”

“Yes, I see it! Thank you.” you happily replay. You look at the green dragon necklace that’s now in your hand. “Wow. This is beautiful too. I love Green Jade. I think I’ll get this for myself.”

You turn your attention back to the man in front of you. “I’ll take the twin dragons please! Oh, and could you wrap up the black one for me, please? It’s going to be a gift.”

The clerk takes the matching dragon necklaces and rings them up; wrapping the black one when he is finished. You walk out of the store triumphant and ready to see Shizuo next week.

On January 28^th, you’re rushing around at work getting ready to leave. As you dash into the back of the store you nearly run into Mr. Matsuoka.

“Hey!” he shouts trying to keep his balance. “What’s the rush? Gotta hot date or something? Hahaha.”

“Sorry, Mr. Matsuoka! I’m trying to get everything finished before I leave.”

“Oh, that’s right! It’s your friend’s birthday today isn’t it? Hmm.... Tell you what. You go ahead and get ready to meet him and I’ll finish up here. And tell him happy birthday.” Mr. Matsuoka tells you, smiling.

“Really!?!?” you say in shock before jumping on him to give him a hug. You finish up and walk out the front door of the shop. Shizuo is already outside waiting for you.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHIZUO!!” you yell as you tackle him.

“Haha. Thanks.” he says as he strokes the top of your head while you’re still hugging him. “You’re out here a little early. Everything okay?”

“Yeah! It’s fine. Mr. Matsuoka went ahead and let me go. Oh! And he says ‘Happy birthday’.”

“Ah. Tell him ‘thanks’. You ready?”

You and Shizuo then head over to the restaurant where you had made reservations for an early dinner. The two of you sit and enjoy each other’s company and have a great time. Even after you finish eating, you continue to talk for another hour until Shizuo suggests sitting in the park for a little while. You make it shortly thereafter and relax by the fountain.

Meanwhile, Izaya knew what today was and figured you would be out doing something. Against his better judgment, he decided to walk around the city wondering if he would ever see you. Once he begins walking along the edge of the park, he spots you. A sad aura envelops him and his heart as he walks away in thought.

After you and Shizuo had been sitting in the park for over an hour, you suddenly remember that you have something special for him waiting at your apartment. Once you get there, you take Shizuo into the kitchen and ask him to close his eyes. You rustle in the refrigerator until you find it and place it on the counter.

“Open!” you tell him.

Shizuo opens his eyes and looks down to find two cupcakes, with a lit candle in the one directly in front of him.

“I know you said that you didn’t want to make a big deal of your birthday, but I couldn’t bring myself to not make you a cake. So I figured just making German Chocolate cupcakes would be best.” you shyly tell Shizuo, hoping he likes it.

“Heheh. That’s just like you. It’s really sweet, thank you.” he says as he leans over on the counter to blow out the candle.

When you finish the cupcakes, you tell him to wait while you grab something from your bedroom. You return with a tiny wrapped box in hand.

“This is for you! Happy birthday!” you say, handing him the box. Shizuo unwraps it and picks up the necklace inside.

“This is cool. What kind of rock is it?” he asks as he examines the dragon in the palm of his hand.

“It’s Black Jade! I actually bought myself one too made of Green Jade.” you say, pulling out the dragon from your pocket.

“Hmm. They match.”

“Yep! Oh, and I can put yours on you if you want.”

Shizuo hands you the necklace and he begins to take off his bowtie and unbutton his shirt. As you watch him, you unintentionally begin to stare and quiver as your heart starts to race and your temperature rises. Luckily, Shizuo wasn’t paying you any mind. When he finishes undoing the fourth button, he sits down on the barstool so you can place the dragon around his neck. You shake off your feelings and happily slip the necklace over Shizuo’s head. Then you slowly run your fingers down along the cord as you rest it along his neck until they reach the jade.

“Hmm.” you hum contently as you back away. Looking softly at the little dragon lying on Shizuo’s chest, you continue, “It looks really good on you.”

Shizuo looks down and fingers the cold jade against his skin. “I like it a lot. Thank you, (f/n).” he says as he looks up at you with a peaceful smile.

You return his smile gently and reply softly, “You’re welcome, Shizuo.” You then lean in and give him a light kiss on the cheek. “I’m glad you like it.” You were kind of surprised to find that his cheek was rather soft; it wasn’t as rough as you had expected.

Shizuo leaves shortly after that and goes home. He walks inside, puts his things down, and proceeds to get ready to take a shower; but there was one thing he didn’t take off. It’s rather cold tonight, so Shizuo later throws on his pajamas, cuts out the light, tosses himself onto his bed, and goes right to sleep.

Shizuo’s pajama shirt has a few buttons at the top that are undone. As he lays there, chest delicately rising and falling, a tiny black dragon sleeps soundly on his skin. Above it, Shizuo wears a serene smile on his face as he sleeps. For the first time in his life, he felt that he was truly happy.
